Leg Ulcers

Ulcers are caused by breaks/ruptures in the skin that fail to heal or keep returning.  Almost all leg ulcers (80%) are caused by vein disease.  Ulcers may be painful; however this is not necessarily the case.  Ulcers are diagnosed in our office by a physician who performs a brief exam of the patient.  The physician notes the patient’s medical history as well as examining the wound to develop a treatment plan.  Oftentimes, treatments are focused on the cause of the ulcer with attention also focused on rapid healing of the open wound.  Our physicians may prescribe antibiotics if an infection is present and will likely use topical wound care therapies.  Doctors will also develop an individualized treatment plan for the patient so as to treat the underlying issues that result in venous ulcers.  Endovenous Laser Treatment, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, and visual sclerotherapy are the methods employed for treatment and potential cure.
