With this procedure, a special light source marks the location of the diseased vein to be removed. Local or regional anesthesia is applied so that the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. Small incisions or needle punctures are made in the skin so that small surgical hooks can be inserted. These hooks grasp the diseased vein and then the diseased vein is removed. This treatment usually allows the diseased vein to be removed in one treatment. The scars that result are usually very small and unnoticeable.
After the procedure, the patient wears a compression bandage for approximately two weeks which helps to minimize swelling and discomfort while ensuring proper healing. Patients having this procedure can return to normal activity the day after treatment.
