Laser Liposuction is a method of liposuction in which fat is melted with precision lasers so that it can be removed more effectively in a manner that’s less invasive. Laser assisted liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that only requires local anesthesia as opposed to riskier general anesthesia.
Introduced to the United States in 2007, laser assisted liposuction is rapidly becoming the preferred method of liposuction compared to others. The technology behind the laser produces bursts of energy at a specific wavelength. The wavelength of this energy is specially designed to focus on the liquefying of fat within the body.
Before the laser is inserted in the body, the patient comes to us for a cosmetic consultation. At the consultation, the doctor and the patient discuss the realistic outcomes of the desired procedures. Once the patient is scheduled for their procedure, they are given instructions for before the procedure and after care. The patient arrives the day of the procedure and an IV is placed in the patient. Tumescent anesthetic is put into the area to receive liposuction and this tumescent is under pressure. Once the patient is adequately anesthetized, the physician makes very small incisions to insert the laser fiber and the cannula to remove the fat. The doctor then proceeds to liquefy the fat while the patient is comfortably and safely awake. The physician communicates with the patient the whole time so as to ensure comfort during the procedure. Unlike conventional liposuction which suctions solid fat through a larger cannula, laser assisted liposuction gently liquefies fat so it can easily drain or be absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system naturally. Laser Liposuction results in less bleeding, less bruising, less swelling and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. The heat from the laser cauterizes the underlying blood vessels resulting in less bleeding, bruising and swelling. Simultaneously, tissue around the area coagulates, resulting in overall skin tightening in the treatment area. Once the fat is liquefied, the physician then suctions the fat out. Following the procedure, the patient is placed under observation, and once cleared, can return home that day. Downtime with this procedure is minimal, with patients often returning to work within days.
There are many advantages to laser assisted liposuction. Less trauma is inflicted on the body with laser assisted liposuction, as liquefied fat is easier to remove than solid fat in traditional liposuction.
