Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment, in our opinion, is the best treatment available for large varicose veins.  Sometimes this treatment is also called Endovenous Laser Ablation or EVLA.

This treatment works by thermally ablating (removing/destroying) incompetent varicose veins.  Our specially designed lasers are designed with a wavelength of light that specifically targets veins.  By permanently shrinking and collapsing the diseased vein, EVLT effectively removes diseased veins at their point of origin.

Performed under local anesthesia, EVLT is a superior method of vein treatment to antiquated methods such as Surgical Vein Stripping.  Utilizing the detailed ultrasound map, the doctor decides which veins will be ablated by EVLT.  Once insurance approval is assured, the patient can be scheduled for the procedure.

The patient comes into the office, is prepped by our clinicians and then the doctor places an IV into the patient.  The IV is a safety measure for any patient having a surgical procedure performed.  Once the patient is ready, the ultrasound sonographer and the physician begin the procedure.  The physician locally anesthetizes the area to be treated, makes a minuscule incision on the lower portion of the extremity and then inserts a small sheath into the lower part of the diseased vein.  Next the doctor feeds the laser fiber to the predetermined section of the diseased vein.  At this point the doctor anesthetizes the entirety of the vein to be treated.

Following all the aforementioned preparation, the doctor turns the laser on which then emits a specific wave length from the laser fiber inside the leg.  The fiber is slowly withdrawn from the vein, and as it withdraws it closes the vein with light and heat energy.

Following the procedure, the patient is encouraged to continue wearing compression stockings as well as to walk frequently.  Necessary follow-up appointments are then scheduled with our friendly receptionists so as to ensure that the treatments are working as planned and to document progress in the treatment of varicose vein disease.
